Teen dead after apparent pool drowning

An 18-year-old North Augusta man was found dead in the family swimming pool Wednesday evening. 

Malakai Jarrett was found by a family member submerged in a backyard pool along Yaun Road in North Augusta. 

Aiken County deputies and EMS were called to the home just after 6:30 p.m. Neighbors were attempting cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the teen when paramedics arrived and took over. 

Jarrett was pronounced dead on scene at 7:55 p.m.

The Sheriff’s Office has opened a death investigation and an autopsy is scheduled through the coroner’s office for Friday morning.
