Thomson Sweeps Laney in Region Action

Lavonta Ivery shoots for three for Thomson against Laney Friday.

Date: January 07, 2023

Thomson’s girls and boys team each earned a blowout win on the road against Laney Friday night in Georgia High School Association Class 2A, Region 4 action. The No. 8 ranked Lady Bulldogs improved to 4-0 in region play with a 72-46 win to join No. 3 Josey as the only two of the region’s eight teams to remain undefeated in league play. Thomson’s boys, ranked No. 4 in the state, improved to 3-1 to join the winner of Friday’s game between Washington County and Putnam County in a tie for second place behind No. 1 Westside, who is 4-0.

Thomson’s boys made it look easy

Thomson’s boys made it look easy Friday by scoring more than 20 points in all four quarters and blitzing Laney 91-61 to improve to 9-2 for the season. Lavonta Ivery led all scorers with 18 points, and Jah’Kiaus Jones and JC Brooks added 16 each. Ten different players scored for Thomson, and five different Bulldogs went on individual scoring runs that served to break the will of the Wildcats as Thomson steadily increased its lead at the end of each quarter.

After falling behind 4-0 Ivery caught the ball on the left wing and made an explosive move to the baseline with his left hand and finished a reverse layup on the other side of the basket to put Thomson on the board. Ivery then immediately stole the inbounds pass and scored again for the fourth of his eight first quarter points. Tramon D’Antignac tossed in a pair of three pointers in the period as the Bulldogs took a 20-14 lead into the second quarter.

The second period belonged to Timmy Steed, who scored all 8 of his points for the game during the quarter, and Jones, who finished the half by swishing a three pointer on a feed from Jaquan Hart to give Thomson a 47-30 halftime lead.

Ivery and Jones then combined to score 15 of Thomson’s 21 third quarter points to give the Bulldogs a 24-point lead heading into the final quarter. Jones looked unguardable off the dribble, and both he and Ivery had it dialed in from deep.

Brooks and junior Daquan Young did most of the heavy lifting in the fourth quarter. The two undersized inside players dominated the paint immediately after coming off the bench in the second quarter. And they combined to score 18 points in the second half.

Jada Kendrick led the way for the Lady Bulldogs

Sophomore Jada Kendrick scored 21 points, Denesha Hester and Ty’leishiah Latimore each added 16, and Paris Rosser chipped in 11 as the Lady Bulldogs built a 44-13 halftime lead that was threatened, but not seriously, during the final two quarters. Laney senior Kiara Turner scored 26 points and led a spirited comeback attempt that narrowed the deficit to 12 points in the fourth quarter before Turner fouled out with 4:49 remaining.
