Motorists who drive Gordon Highway, particularly those heading to Fort Gordon, are seeing major changes now and continuing into Oct. 25.
The first change is that all four of the newly built lanes from Gate 2, heading west to the new Gate 6 opened on Oct. 18. Traffic signals at the Gate 6 interchange are on flash mode and will be fully operational on Oct. 21.
This is all leading to the opening of the newly constructed Gate 6 to be the new, main entry point to Fort Gordon.
Georgia Department of Transportation says Gates 2 and 3 will close at 8 p.m., Friday, Oct. 22.
Although Gate 6 officially opens on Oct. 25, some changes will begin at 5:45 a.m., Oct. 23. Gate 6 will be the main access point for Department of Defense ID card holders, commercial vehicles and installation visitors and non-DOD ID card holders requiring passes. All visitors and non-DOD ID card holders will use the far, left hand lane. All commercial vehicles will use the far right hand lane.
All visitors and non-DOD ID card holders who require passes must use the Visitor Control Center at Gate 6. The VCC will be open 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and closed on Sunday.

Once Gate 6 become the main access point the public can’t drive straight across from Robinson Avenue. There will be two right-turn lanes and one left-turn lane from Robinson Avenue to the four-lane highway.
This work is the culmination of a 2.4-mile, $15.7 million construction project to widen Gordon Highway to four lanes. It includes a grass median and 10-foot-wide outside shoulders.
