This recent job I designed for a clients bedroom is a great way to show how a project can be designed and implemented.
The client had a large bedroom. The walls were painted a light cream, so it was very stark and cold. My client liked the color blue. I had to come up with bedding and window treatments. Considering a husband and wife share the bedroom, I couldn’t go too feminine or too masculine.
I had to find a main (theme) fabric to begin the project. The fabric on the flanged shams was a great choice. It had nice movement to the pattern and the colors were shades of blue and cream. It appealed to both of my clients.
When I can, I always like to add large Euro pillows against the headboard. And I like this fabric to be an upholstery weight fabric. As my client might sit against the headboard, these pillows can give a nice soft cushion, (especially if your headboard is wood), or can save your upholstered headboard from hair oils and products staining it.
In this case, I chose a navy blue that accented the theme fabric well. And it creates a layer of pop between the headboard and the decorative pillows. My client didn’t want a lot of pillows, so I designed a large roll pillow in the front.
Considering how large this accent pillow was to be, I designed a collage of fabrics and trims to add good texture and make this pillow special.
I found a nice complimenting fabric for the center, neutral velvet to the left and right, with a fun braided trim to cover the seam, a blue velvet for the ends and a brush fringe to fit into the end seams and add more detail!
Take a look at the layers, especially the gradation of heights that balance the look so well and draw your eye to the tufted headboard and the art above. We kept the bed cover neutral and one that can easily be laundered as my client has two dogs that might make themselves at home laying on the bed.

Next came the windows. My client had blinds, so privacy and light filtering was already in check. However, the windows appeared cold and in need of a little attention.

I found a great co-ordintaing fabric that played off of the bedding details nicely. We placed only one panel on each of the windows. This helps to frame the bed as you enter the bedroom. It visually opens up the wall and is not too heavy or busy. It took the coldness from the windows and warmed up the space nicely.

The ceiling had a tray ceiling. Considering the walls and ceiling were all light, I wanted to warm the space a little further. I found this great wallpaper that looked like an old tin ceiling in neutral colors, and it added great texture and warmth to the room!

And then we had the en-suite bathroom to consider. Look how cold this window feels over the bathtub.

Another co-ordinating fabric I found that plays well from the bedroom fabrics and an elegant swag design, along with beaded trim along the bottom, makes for a simple yet lovely and warm design. I like to add graceful sweeps off fabric, especially where squares and rectangles are prominent such as windows, doors, architectural features, etc.
