Charcuterie boards and grazing tables have become all the rage when entertaining, and I am a big fan, as most of the goodies are so flavorful. Dessert tables are also a big hit, but then again, sweets never go out of vogue with me.
However, so many times, probably because charcuterie boards are meant to evoke a rural sort of theme, not a lot of thought goes into this new trend, and most people tend to layer things on haphazardly on plates and boards, leaving everything low and flat on the table.
I like to create layers and depth not only in my decor, but in anything I create, especially where food is involved! I like to create experiences, especially when I am hosting or entertaining.
When creating displays of food, consider adding height to your dishes. You can easily use a cake stand to elevate a cake, cookies, cupcakes, or even plates of cheese or dips. However, if you don’t have one handy, you will see that they can be costly at the stores. And I like to use multiple heights to create a pop at the food table.
There are so many items that you could use to create these heights, and you probably already have some of them in your home that you rarely ever use. Let me share a few ideas.
You first want to consider the theme of the party and/or the character of the room.
With the holidays coming up, here is a festive idea. Take a round glass bowl, maybe even a fish bowl. Place some pine cones from your yard inside and add some battery operated lights. Turn it upside down and glue a red plate on top. This plate could be ceramic or plastic. The one shown here was $3 at a local craft store! Maybe add some Christmas ornaments in the bowl to add some color or to coordinate with your decor.

Take a footed candy dish and turn it upside down and glue a white ceramic plate on top!

You could take a bowl that matches your serving bowls and turn it upside down and glue a ceramic plate on top. Maybe use a double sided tape to adhere the items so that you can pull it apart after your party.

Here is a great idea. Take a thick candle stick and use it as the base. Sometimes these candlesticks come in varying heights, so you could add a lot of interest to your table! Make sure it is round enough to hold the plate!

If you have a farmhouse theme, consider a melamine plaid plate that would work well with your decor.

I found a two tiered metal stand. This would give you some really great height and has a more rustic feel.

Maybe you can find a matching bowl and plate for a more simpler look and find a coordinating ribbon to add some color, pattern or texture.

These pieces can hold savory or sweet foods. They aren’t just for desserts. Your guests will find your table exceptionally appealing and you will be asked for tips when they entertain!
Keep it fun and easy. Don’t overthink it!
