The Brier Creek Soil and Water Conservation District is hosting a free informational workshop for local farmers, agricultural enthusiasts and anyone who wants to learn more about getting started in urban agriculture to discuss the basics of starting an urban agriculture operation.
The Brier Creek Soil and Water Conservation District is a unit of state government that directs natural resource management programs in Richmond, Glascock, Jefferson, Burke and Jenkins counties.
The Conservation District works with farmers, landowners and with other units of government to educate and actively promote programs and practices that support the conservation, and use development of soil, water and related resources.
The farming workshop will discuss general practices and options for starting an urban agriculture operation, such as soil testing, raised beds, non-organic vs organic, aquaponics and pollinators.
The workshop will be held on Thursday, Feb. 29, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Burke County Auditorium, located at 715 W Sixth St., in Waynesboro, Ga. Dinner will also be served and check-in begins at 5:30 p.m.
Topics of discussion will be provided by several partnering organizations, including: the University of Georgia Extension, Burke County High School and Hephzibah High School Future Farmers of America students, Solid Ground Services & Supply, Natural Resources Conservation Services (NRCS).
