The 2022 Augusta National Women’s Amateur champion Anna Davis was penalized four strokes in the first hole of play Wednesday at Champions Retreat Golf Club.

According to a statement from the tournament headquarters, Davis lifted her ball and failed to replace it in its original spot. This happened twice on the first hole, resulting her five being increased to a nine.

The four strokes put Davis four over par for the day setting her 10 strokes from the leader.

“It’s playing a little different that it did last week due to all of the rain,” Davis said.

Rose Zhang the current leader shot a 66, which is the lowest score ever recorded in any round in the Women’s Amateur’s history.

Zhang had a bogeyless round with six birdies. The Birdies included all five par-5 holes and one par-3 hole on the Bluff 9.

“From the start of the round I just really wanted to kind of make pars because at Champions Retreat you never know what your going to be getting,” Zhang said.

A Stanford University sophomore, Zhang represented the United States in the Curtis Cup, Arnold Palmer Cup and Women’s World Amateur Team Championships. She also made the cut in the U.S. Women’s Open, Amundi Evian Championship and AIG Women’s Open, according to her bio.

Prior to her collegiate success, the 19-year-old won the 2017 Girls Junior PGA Championship, 2020 U.S. Women’s Amateur and 2021 U.S. Girls’ Junior, earned AJGA Rolex Girls Player of the Year honors in 2019 and 2020 and represented the United States in the Junior Solheim Cup, Junior Ryder Cup and Pan American Games.

Out of the 72 players, only 12 finished under par for the day.
