As you consider a room makeover, I feel the following template will assist in making the task much easier.
Begin your project with items that are more limiting. As well, this item should also begin the story you want to tell…the theme of the room. So start with a fabric, rug or artwork.
Usually, there is a theme or pattern involved. If you desire a round rug, you are certainly limited. If you want a certain artwork theme or pattern, this can be limiting, especially if you want art of the same series and of a certain size.
Considering fabric pillows or window treatments, you might be limited if you want an abstract floral in a certain color way or a particular open weave texture.
Once you have found these items, continue on with the “background”…the walls and floors.
Pull your tones and colors from your themed pieces. Paint is limitless and inexpensive. Hardwood floors are very popular but you want to select the right stain and finish that to compliment your fabrics, art and especially rugs.
I continue to see light fixtures that don’t work well in some peoples’ homes. Consider the light value and not just the style of a fixture. If you have a volume ceiling, make sure your chandelier has two or more tires of lights so that at night the room is properly lit.
Many open floor plans make one consider the foyer, dining, living and sometimes kitchen fixtures all together. Do they compliment each other in style and light value? Does one overpower the other? Is lamplight necessary? What about ceiling “can lights” or wall sconces?
If you don’t want a theme fabric at your windows, you can always move that task down the line. Most treatments are very neutral these days. It has become more about texture and an organic feel.
Consider if you want something decorative or something that manages the sunlight or maybe even a street lamp. Maybe you want something motorized so that at a click of a button you can give your room some quick privacy.
Furniture is next up! Consider the layering effect. You have created the perfect backdrop with the other elements and now you have to consider traffic flow and lifestyle.
Then comes the fun. Decor and accessories! Have fun! Pull in colors from your themed objects. Don’t overdo it. Again, layer and create dimension and depth. Make it interesting!
